Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture high-purity white gypsum applicable to various uses by reacting a sodium sulfate soln. by-produced from a process for desulfurizing stack gas after burning heavy oil with a soluble calcium salt at a low pH.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous sodium sulfate soln. contg. several 10ppm V, Fe, Ni and other heavy metallic impurities after desulfurizing stack gas is adjusted to 2W6pH, and a soluble calcium salt such as CaCl2 is added to the soln. to obtain gypsum crystals. Since V ions in the soln. are converted into condensation type ions and made larger as the pH is lowered, the V ions become unfit for the ionic radius of ionic gypsum crystals, and it becomes difficult for the V ions to enter the crystals. Accordingly, the concn. of V in gypsum is reduced. Other heavy metals have similar tendency. By lowering the pH of the sodium sulfate soln. within a range where the apparatus is not corroded prior to the reaction, high-purity gypsum is obtd.
