Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture high quality yellow iron oxide contg. little impurities by separating Ti from an aqueous divalent iron salt soln. contg. metal impurities in the presence of alkali under specified conditions and adding alakli or metallic iron to the Ti-free soln. to prevent coprecipitation of Fe and Mn ions.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous soln. of ferrous salt contg. Mn, Ti, etc., e.g., recovered from ilmenite waste liq. is contacted to oxygen-contg. gas in the presence of alkali, especially ammonia at 20W50°C until the pH is lowered from 5W7 to 3W4, and by filtration-separating the resulting precipitate, the Ti is separated. The filtrate is adjusted to pH≤2.5 with sulfuric acid in the presence of metallic iron, further adjusted to pH≤7 in the presence or absence of seed yellow iron oxide, and contacted to oxygen-contg. gas at 40W100°C in the presence of alkali or metallic iron to obtain yellow iron oxide. The Ti content and the Mn content are 0.005wt% or less and 0.02% or less, respectively.
