Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove effectively metals, oils, and organic contaminants from waste water by the procedure in which an oily waste water containing silicic acid and metal salts is treated with a water-soluble silicate, an aluminum salt, and slaked lime, the precipitate is removed, and then the waste water is brought into contact with a solid adsorbent.
CONSTITUTION: A water-soluble silicate, such as sodium silicate, is added to an oily waste water containing silicic acid and metal salts in such a proportion that the concentration of the silicic acid becomes approx. 500ppm or more. Then, a water- soluble aluminum salt, such as aluminum polychloride or aluminum sulfate, is added to the waste water, and furthermore slaked lime is added to the waste water to adjust its pH to 10W12.5, preferably 11.5W12, to form precipitate. Then, the precipitate is removed, and a mineral acid is added to the waste water so treated to adjust its pH to 6W8, and the waste water is passed through a solid adsorbent, such as activated carbon or activated clay, or stirred with the solid adsorbent to remove residual organic contaminants.
