Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high yield, by adding a specific amount of an alkali together with water to the reaction system of hydrolyzing a polyether prepared by polymerizing tetrahydrofuran, etc. in the presence of a ring-opening polymerization catalyst such as fuming sulfuric acid, thereby carrying out the complete hydrolysis without using a large amount of water.
CONSTITUTION: A polyether glycol is prepared by the hydrolysis of a polyether obtained by the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran or its mixture with other copolymerizable cyclic ethers in the presence of a ring-opening polymerization catalyst composed mainly of fuming sulfuric acid or fluorosulfuric acid. In the above process, an alkali (e.g. alkali metal hydroxide, ammonia, etc.) is added to the hydrolyzation reaction system. The amount of the alkali is ≥1/4, pref. ≥1/3 of the amount necessary to neutralize the mixture of fuming sulfuric acid, fluorosulfuric acid and water used in the polymerization reaction, and less than the amount to keep the pH of the hydrolyzation reaction system below 3. Since the solubility of the polyether glycol in the acidic aqueous solution is remarkably reduced, the considerable lowering of the yield can be prevented.
