Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a water-soluble phenolic resin useful as adhesives for rubbers, etc., soluble in water irrespective of its pH and having low viscosity at high concentation, by carrying out the first stage reaction in the presence of an alkali catalyst, neutralizing the product, thereafter carrying out the second stage reaction.
CONSTITUTION: 0.4W1 Mole of formaldehyde is added to 1 mole of resorcinol or a phenolic mixture containing ≥50 wt% of resorcinol. An alkali catalyst, e.g. sodium hydroxide, etc., is added to the mixture and the reaction in carried out preferably at 30W90°C to attain the formaldehyde conversion of ≥ about 40%. The pH value is reduced preferably to ≤(4W5) by neutralizing the reaction mixture with an acid, e.g. sulfuric acid, etc.. The second stage reaction is carried out preferably at 90W 130°C to give a water-soluble phenol resin.
