Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a uniform porous glass matrix having lowered outer diameter variation and stable outer diameter, by providing an exhaustion opening for the removal of excess fine glass particles and reaction products near the growing surface of the porous matrix. CONSTITUTION:Raw materials of glass and combustible gas are introduced to a synthesis torch 41, and subjected to hydrolysis reaction and thermoxidation reaction in the torch to form a porous matrix 47 composed of attached and deposited fine particles of synthetic glass. Excess glass fine particles and reaction products 43, 44 which do not contribute to the growth of the porous matrix 47, are removed from the stream of glass fine powders and flame 42 through the exhaustion openings 45, 46 placed in the neighborhood of the porous matrix 47. The process suppresses the outer diameter variation of the porous matrix 47, prevents the formation of a glass powder layer having low bulk density to the side wall of the porous matrix, and prevents the crack-formation at the side wall of the matrix 47. Consequently, the subsequent heating of the matrix at a high temperature followed by defoaming gives a transparent glass matrix in high stability.
