PURPOSE:To efficiently stick high quality sulfide to the inner wall of a glass pipe by thermally decomposing one or more kinds of gaseous compound starting materials each contg. Si or Ge and S. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber base material having high transmittance in an >=about 2mum long wavelength region is obtd. using sulfide as starting material. For example, Ge(SC2H5)4 or Si(SC2H5)4 as feed material is filled into feed material container 2 made of glass. By introducing a carrier inert gas from gas inlet 1, the material is gasified and fed into glass pipe 4 set to glass lathe 3. The gaseous material is heated to about 250 deg.C at heating section 5 to form powdered GeS2 or SiS2, which is then melted by heating to about 850 deg.C to obtain glassy GeS2 or SiS2. Thus, high quality sulfide can be manufactured efficiently.
