Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber base material having a transmission region ranging from the visible region to the infrared region by forming an oxide glass layer on the inside of a glass pipe and allowing sulfur or a sulfur compound to act on the layer at a high temp. CONSTITUTION:An oxide glass layer corresponding to a core part is formed on the inside of a glass pipe. For example, SiCl4 or GeCl4 is introduced into a glass pipe together with a carrier gas and heat oxidized to form an oxide glass layer of SiO2 or GeO2. Sulfur or one or more kinds of sulfur compounds such as S2Cl2 and S2Br2 are then fed together with an inert gas to convert part or all of the oxide glass layer into sulfide, e.g. GeS2. The reaction temp. is about 1,100-1,200 deg.C. Thus, an optical fiber base material having a transparent wavelength region ranging to longer wavelengths is obtd.
