Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable continuous operation of the title feeder and to maintain the quality of optical fiber base material uniform by always maintain the height of a glass raw material melt, in a fixed range, stored in a raw material container. CONSTITUTION:Raw material container 30 is provided with carrier gas feed pipe 31, vaporous glass raw material feed pipe 34, float 33 and float position detector 32. Float 33 rises and falls as the surface of a glass raw material melt rises and falls, and detector 32 detects the position of float 33. In accordance with the difference between the preset position of float 33 and the position of float 33 measured with detector 32, controller 37 gives instructions to auxiliary container 36 to feed 35 glass raw material. Since glass raw material can be supplied from container 36 in the form of a melt, no influence is exerted on the vol. of vaporous glass raw material fed to a reaction zone. Accordingly, by enlarging the capacity of container 36 long- time continuous operation of the title feeder is enabled.
