Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Sesquiterpene compounds of formulas IWIII.
USE: Synthetic intermediates of an antifeedant for army worm and a fungicide. Useful for the total synthesis of cinnamodial and cinnamosmolide which are natural substances.
PROCESS: The compound of formula IV is treated with zinc powder in a solvent such as acetic acid to afford the compound of formula I. Treatment of the compound of formula I with an oxidizing agent gives the compound of formula II. The reaction is pref. carried out using Jones reagent as the oxidizing agent in acetone at -10W 0°C. The compound of formula III is obtained by treating the compound of formula II with a dialcohol and an organic acid. The especially preferable solvent is benzene, organic acid is p-toluenesulfonic acid, and dialcohol is 1,3-propanediol.
