Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out the total synthesis of cinnamodial, which is an antifeedant for army worms, from a specific sesquiterpene compound derived from easily available isodrimenin through nine new intermediates.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I derived from isodrimenin is made to react with β,β,β-trichloroethoxycarbonyl chloride to give a compound of formula II, which is oxidized to give a compound of formula III. The compound obtained is subjected to the following treatment subsequently to give a compound of formula IV (Ac is COCH3): Reduction, acetylation, treatment with Zn powder, oxidation, treatment with a dialcohol and an organic acid, and treatment with an alkali. The compound of formula IV is made to react with an oxidizing agent under basic or neutral conditions to give a compound of formula V, which is made to react with an organic acid to afford cinnamodial of formula VI. Cinnamodial is known as a substance extracted from a spedific plant.
