Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound which is an intermediate for a β-blocker (a cardiac drug) and an anti-inflammatory agent in a short step simply, by reacting an industrially and readily available 4-haloalkylphenol ester derivative as a raw material with a cyanogenating agent.
CONSTITUTION: A 4-haloalkylphenol ester derivative expressed by formula III (R is lower alkyl or aryl; R1 is H halogen or alkoxyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl or aryl; X is halogen) as a raw material is reacted with a cyanogenating agent, e.g. potassium cyanide, to give a 4-hydroxybenzyl nitrile derivative of formula I. The raw material is obtained by reacting a 4-alkylphenol ester derivative expressed by formula II with a halogenating agent.
