Abstract

PURPOSE: Trioxane resulting from heat distillation of formalin is extracted with benzene and the extract is distilled under specific conditions to give high-purity trioxane with less contents of water and formic acid in high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: A formaldehyde aqueous solution is heated to give a solution containing trioxane, water and formaldehyde, which is extracted with benzene. The extract is fed to the distillation column to effect continuous distillation so that trioxane is separated wherein the concentration of trioxane in the feedstock X is kept within equation I [R is reflux ratio; γ is a parameter defined by equation II (q is weight ratio of the liquid part in the feedstock; c is concentration in % of trioxane in the feedstock)].
