Abstract
PURPOSE: To use an O-silylketene acetal obtained by reacting a lithiofatty acid ester with a silyl halide as a silylating agent.
CONSTITUTION: A fatty acid ester or formula I (R is H or lower alkyl; R4 is lower alkyl) is reacted with lithium amide to give a lithiofatty acid ester of formula II, which is then reacted with a silyl halide of formula III (R1, R2 and R3 are lower alkyl; Hal is halogen) to afford an O-silylketene acetal of formula IV. An organic amine (H.Z) present in the reaction mixture is converted into a quaternary ammonium salt and removed from the reaction mixture, and the aimed compound of formula IV is then readily isolated. The resultant compound of formula IV is so highly active as to silylate even a tertiary alcohol and is an excellent silylating agent capable of forming a silylation product of high purity quantitatively under very mild conditions.
