Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain pyridine useful as an organic solvent, etc. readily in high yield, by heat-treating a pyridine compound, e.g. pyridinecarboxamide, with water in the presence of a metallic compound selected from Cu, Ni, Co, etc. as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A pyridine compound consisting of a pyridinecarboxamide, e.g. nicotinamide, and a cyanopyridine, e.g. 2-cyanopyridine, or a mixture containing two or more of them is heat-treated in the presence of a catalyst consisting of one or two or more metallic compounds selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ni, Co, Mn, Zn, V and Fe and water at 250W450°C, prererably 300W400°C, to give pyridine. The catalyst can be prepared by the general method, and a chloride, nitrate, sulfate, lower fatty acid salt, etc. may be used.
USE: A basic raw material for chemical industry, particularly basic raw materials for agricultural chemicals and medicines.
