Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain pyridine readily in high yield, by heat-treating a pyridinecarboxamide with a cyanopyridine and water in the presence of a metal chromite, e.g. Cu, Zn, Sn, Co, Mn or Ni, as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of one or two or more pyridine compounds consisting of a pyridinecarboxamide and a cyanopyridine, e.g. picolinamide or nicotinamide, is heat-treated with water to give pyridine. In the reaction, a metal chromite, consisting of a metal selected from Cu, Znu, Sn, Co, Mn and Ni, is used as a catalyst. For example, the copper chromite is obtained by dropping an aqueous solution of copper sulfate to an aqueous solution containing sodium dichromate and ammonia under stirring, filtering, washing, drying, and thermally decomposing the resultant ammonium copper chromate.
