Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce 3-trifluoromethylpyridine, useful as a raw material for organo- synthetic chemical industries, economically, in an industrial scale, by reducing a specific chloro-3-trifluoromethylpyridine derivative.
CONSTITUTION: 3-Trifluoromethylpyridine is prepared by reducing one or more chloro-3-trifluoromethylpyridine compounds selected from 2-chloro-3-trifluoromethylpyridine, 2-chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine and 2,6-dichloro-3-trifluoromethylphridine. The reduction can be carried out under ordinary conditions, i.e. substitution reaction of a halogen with hydrogen. For example, the raw material is catalytically reacted with H2 gas in the presence of a Ni catalyst. As trifluoromethyl does not decompose and only Cl is selectively substituted with H, the desired compound can be obtained in high yield.
