Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a cinnamate useful as a raw material for pesticides or photosensitive resins in high yield, by reacting a styrene with carbon monoxide, an alcohol, and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst under carbon monoxide partial pressure of not higher than a specific value.
CONSTITUTION: A styrene is reacted with carbon monoxide, an alcohol, and oxygen by using a mixture of a platinum group metal or its compound (e.g., palladium chloride) and a copper salt (e.g., cupric chloride) or an iron salt as a main catalyst, to give a cinnamate (e.g., ethyl cinnamate). At the beginning or in the middle of the reaction, the reaction is carried out under the condition that carbon monoxide partial pressure in the system is not higher than 18kg/cm2.G, when carbon monoxide and/or oxygen is fed. Since carbon monoxide partical pressure is thus controlled, the yield of main product is reversed to improve the yield of the desired compound.
