Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain diacetoxybutane useful as a raw material of 1,4-butanediol and THF, in high yield, by hydrogenating diacetoxybutene using a specific palladium-carbon catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Diacetoxybutene is hydrogenated in liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst composed mainly of palladium supported by carbon. The reaction is carried out by adjusting the concentration of the palladium metal in the catalyst to 1×10-6W1×-1wt% of the diacetoxybutene. By specifying the amount of palladium within the restricted range, the production of butyl acetate can be suppressed, and consequently, diacetoxybutane is obtained in high selectivity.
