Abstract

PURPOSE: The directly catalytic reduction of trans-hydroperoxy-β-thujene is effected by simple operations to produce title compound useful as a peppermeint enhancer for toothpaste, food and beverage in high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: A peroxide resulting from photooxidation of α-thujene, trans-4- hydroperoxy-β-thujene, is catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst, preferably 5W10% of Raney or Urushibara nickel, under pressure at 0W40°C to produce the objective trans-sabinene hydrate.
EFFECT: The complicated processes as solvent evaporation are unnecessary and the method is free from danger caused by the peroxide on evaporation.
