Abstract
PURPOSE: The reaction between a saturated aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic anhydride and hydrogen is conducted using as catalysts a metal of group VIII or its compound and a saturated aliphatic or aromatic halide of specified carbon atoms to produce the titled substance in high yield under mild conditions in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: When the titled substance is produced by reaction between a saturated aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic anhydride of 5W36 carbon atoms and hydrogen, a metal of group VIII in the periodic table and/or its compound and a saturated aliphatic or aromatic halide of 1W18 carbon atoms are used as catalysts. The effective metal catalyst is, e.g., Pd, Rh, Pt and Ru and the use of the metallic elements or their carbonate salt as a heterogeneous catalyst facilitates the separation, purification of the product and the separation and recovery of the catalyst. The halide is preferably methyl halide. The amount of the catalyst used is 2.5×10-3W10wt% in the group VIII metal, calculated as metallic element, and the halide is 10-1W3mol per 1 liter of the reaction mixture calculated as the halogen atom.
