Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain pyridine in high yield, by heat-treating a pyridinecarboxamide and a cyanopyridine with water in the presence of Raney nickel, Raney cobalt, nickel formate or reduced nickel as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of one or two or more pyridine compounds consisting of a pyridinecarboxamide and a cyanopyridine is heat-treated with water to give pyridine. In the reaction, Raney nickel, Raney cobalt, nickel formate or reduced nickel is used as a catalyst. The reaction is carried out at 250W450°C. Picolinamide, nicotinamide, etc. may be cited as the pyridine compounds.
