Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a starting material of synthetic resins, pesticides etc., in high yield, by the reaction of methylbenzylamine with a mixed gas of O2 and NH3 in the presence of a specific catalyst, e.g. an oxide of Cr, Mn, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Phthalonitrile is obtained by the catalytic reaction of methylbenzylamine with a mixture of O2 or O2-containing gas and NH3 in the presence of a catalyst comprising one or more kinds of the oxides of V, Cr, Fe, W, etc. or the oxides and one or more kinds of the oxides of B, P and Te. The reaction temperature is pref. in the range of 300W550°C. The concentration of methylbenzylamine is preferably in the range of 0.1W5vol%.
