Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled inexpensive nonmagnetic steel having austenite very stable at cryogenic temp. and showing superior strength, toughness and ductility by adding C, Si, Mn, etc. to provide a specified composition.
CONSTITUTION: This nonmagnetic body for a cryogenic temp. high magnetic field apparatus consists of, by wt., 0.08W0.45% C, ≤1% Si, 27W45% Mn, 4W13% Cr, 0.08W0.3% N, ≤0.5% Ni, ≤0.5% Mo and the balance Fe and inevitable impurities. The austenite of the body is very stable at ≥4°K cryogenic temp., and the body shows superior strength, toughness and ductility. Since Mn, Cr and N are contained as principal alloying components, and inexpensive Mn which is abundant in resources is utilized in place of expensive Ni and Mo, this nonmagnetic body is very inexpensive.
