Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance which is a synthetic raw material for an antiallergic and an antimicrobial agents in high yeild industrially and advantageously, by oxidizing chromone-3-carboxaldehyde with MClO2 which is readily subjected to waste liquor disposal as an oxidizing agent in the presence of a chlorine capturing agent.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I which may have a substituent is oxidized with MClO2 (M is alkali metal) in the presence of a chlorine capturing agent, e.g. sulfamic acid or resorcinol, to give chromone-3-carboxylic acid of formula II. Sodium chlorite or potassium chlorite is used as the MClO2. The reaction is carried out usually at -10W40°C, preferably at 10W20°C, and a water-insoluble and water- soluble solvent, e.g. dichloromethane or acetone, is used. The waste liquor can be treated by the conventional methods, e.g. actived sludge method, without causing pollution due to no chromic acid oxidizing agent.
