Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove an iron component without losing zirconium as a main component by a method wherein an aqueous iron containing zirconium solution is added by an oxidizing agent and an org. phase of methylisobutylketone containing thiocyanic acid is subjected to the countercurrent contact with the aforementioned solution.
CONSTITUTION: In a procedure for separating zirconium and hafnium, an oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite is added to an iron containing raw aqueous solution to convert ferrous ion the ferric ion. This aqueous solution and an org. phase of methylisobutylketone containing thiocyanic acid are subjected to the countercurrent contact to transfer an iron component to an org. phase. Moreover, the said iron is back extracted from the org. phase by using wate. By this method, the iron component is removed in a high yield without almost losing zirconium.
