Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, a fiber-processing agent and esp. a shrinkproofing agent of regenerated fibers, readily and in high yield, by the oxidation of bishydroxyethylsulfide (sulfoxide) at pH8-11 using a hypochlorite as an inexpensive oxidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: Bishydroxyethylsulfide or bishydroxyethylsulfoxide is oxidized with a hypochorite (e.g. an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, and aqueous solution of calcium hypochlorite, chloride of lime, an aqueous solution containing sodium hypochlorite obtained by the reaction of NaOH aqueous solution and chlorine, an aqueous solution containing calcium hypochlorite obtained by the reaction of calcium hydroxide and chlorine; and their concentration is ≥5%) at 0W80°C without a catalyst, maintaining pH to 8-11, to give bishydroxyethylsulfone. The pH is controlled by introducing an aqueous solution of mineral acid into the reaction vessel.
