Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high strength Al alloy with superior extrusion workability by controlling the magnesium silicide content of an Al alloy to a proper value and adding a specified amount of Cu, Cr, Fe, etc.
CONSTITUTION: This Al alloy contains 0.35W0.55% Mg, 0.55W0.75% Si, 0.12W 0.19% Fe, 0.20W0.40% Cu and 0.20W0.40% Cr. 0.31W0.40% Cu and 0.25W 0.35% Cr are preferably contained. Mn may be substituted for part of Cr, and the suitable total amount of Cr and Mn is 0.35W0.50%. The Mg silicide content of the alloy is proper, giving superior strength and extrusion workability, and Cu, Cr, etc. added further enhance the extrusion workability and strength. A billet of this alloy is heat homogenized, extruded, cooled, reheated, water hardened, and used. Aging may be carried out after the hardening.
