Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the mechanical properties and workability of an Al-Si type alloy by adding a little Sr to the alloy melted; solidifying the Sr-added molten alloy at a specified cooling rate; and plastic-working the solidified alloy at a specified temp. and a specified working percentage.
CONSTITUTION: A molten alloy consisting of, by wt., Si 8W20%, Mg≤0.75%, Cu≤4%, Sr 0.001W0.04% and the balance Al is solidified at a cooling rate of 5°C/sec or more to finely crystallize the Si. The solidified alloy is then plastic-worked in the temp. range of 200°C to the m.p. of the alloy at a working percentage of 30% or more to finely spheroidizing the eutectic Si phase furthermore. By this method an Al-Si type alloy is obtd. having superior toughness after plastic working.
