Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the hardenability and toughness of an Al-Mg-Si alloy by restricting the ratio of Si to Mg contained in the alloy to a specified range, adding a small amount of Cu and Cr and carrying out heat treatment in specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: To Al are added 0.65W0.80% Si, 0.75W0.94% Mg and 0.20W 0.40% Cu as strength increasing elements, and 0.04W0.10% Cr is further added as a hardening element. Since less Si and Mg result in insufficient strength and more Si and Mg in lower hardenability, to improve both the strength and hardenability the Si and Mg contents are restricted to said ranges while satisfying equation 0.7≤Si/Mg<1.0. An ingot of this Al alloy is heated at 545W575°C for ≥90min, extruded and worked, and cooled at 2.5W6.0°C/sec cooling rate to enhance both the hardenability and toughness.
