Abstract

PURPOSE: To make proeutectic Si grains of the resulting hypereutectic Al-Si alloy fine by adding a mixture of P2S5 with NaCl as a grain refiner to a molten hypereutectic Al-Si alloy.
CONSTITUTION: To a molten Al-Si alloy contg. 14W30% Si is added a mixture consisting of 0.01W5.0% P2S5 and 0.01W5% NaCl to the amount of the molten alloy as a grain refiner. By pouring this molten alloy in a mold and solidifying it by cooling, proeutectic Si grains of the resulting hypereutectic Al-Si alloy are made fine. Even if the molten alloy is kept for a long time, the grain refining effect is well maintained. The hypereutectic Al-Si alloy contg. fine proeutectic Si grains has superior machinability and mechanical strength as well as a low coefft. of thermal expansion, and it is utilized in various uses.
