Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a rare earth element magnet with superior magnetic characteristics by forming powder of an alloy consisting of rare earth elements and other elements into a magnet and by sintering in a high pressure gas atmosphere and annealing.
CONSTITUTION: Rare earth elements and other elements are weighed, melted in an inert gas such as Ar substituted after evacuation, and cast in a metal mold to manufacture an alloy ingot. The ingot is pulverized in an inert gas, in vacuum or in an org. solvent free from water and impurities. The resulting powder is formed or press-formed into a magnet in a magnetic field. In order to further raise the density the magnet is sintered in a high pressure gas atmosphere or Ar, He, N2 or other gas of about 3W100atm. after evacuation, and then it is annealed. Thus, evaporation of the rare earth elements is reduced, and the magnetic characteristics, especially coercive force are enhanced.
