Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare economically the titled compound to be anticipated as a drug, having an action of lowering side effect of an antitumor agent, etc., by reacting a 5-hydroxy-methylpyrimidine derivative with a metal such as zinc in the presence of a hydrohalogenic acid.
CONSTITUTION: A 5-hydroxymethylpyrimidine derivative (e.g., 5-hydroxymethyl- 2',3-O-isopropylideneuridine) shown by the formula I (R is pentose which may have a protecting group, pentose phosphate, or H) is reacted with a metal in the presence of a hydrohagenic acid (e.g., hydriodic acid, etc.) so that a hydroxymethyl group at 5-position is reduced to methyl group to give the desired compound shown by the formula II (e.g., 5-methyluridine).
EFFECT: A high-priced catalyst and a device for catalytic reduction are not required in use.
