Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a fixed longitudinally short steel ingot without entailing a molding board crack by covering the inside wall of a mold with a heat insulator except a ring-shaped lip part and by specifying the ratios of molding board thickness and molding board weight to poured steel weight.
CONSTITUTION: On molding board 1, flat mold 2 is mounted and the inside wall of it is covered with heat insulator 5 except ring-shaped lip part 3 at the inside of the bottom of mold 2. The thickness of molding board 2 should be not less than 350mm, and ratio W1/W2 of molding board weight W1 to poured steeel weight W2 not less than 0.7. Melted steel 4 to be poured into mold 2 is solidified radpidly by molding board 2 and ring-shaped lip part 3, minimizing the leakage of melted metal from the bottom of mold 2. Because of heat insulator 5, solidification from the side wall of mold 2 is prevented and because of heat insulator 6 placed over melted metal 4, that from the top of the melted metal is eliminated, attaining unidirectional solidification from the bottom of mold 2. Thus, the cracking of molding board 1 is prevented and the internal quality of the longitudinally short steel ingot is improved.
