Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a large-sized steel ingot having no internal defects with high performance by specifying the height of molten metal and the inclination of the solidification interface from the side faces of a mold in upward solidification of molen steel in the mold.
CONSTITUTION: The side walls 2 of a mold 1 are formed in such a way that the heat conductivity increases gradually from the upper bricks 3 thereof to lower bricks 8. Molten metal 12 is teemed so as not to allow its height to exceed 1,000mm, and the surface of the molten steel 12 is insulated with exothermic or heat insulating flux 13 so that the solidification is progressed from the bottom surface toward above. At this time, the solidification at the end of the side walls 2 of the steel ingot inclines the solidifcation interface by ≥25°C with respect to the perpendicular face as shown by 14, 15, 16 by the effect of heat conductivity difference. Then, the solidification interfaces assumes a shape approximate to horizontal, and the large-sized steel ingot having no ghost formation is obtained.
