Abstract

PURPOSE:To minimize the coupling loss of an optical fiber by permanently connecting a coupler using material having the same refractive index as an optical fiber core to be connected and having a bottom portion including larger area than the light emitting region of a light emitting diode having a multilayer epitaxial layer onto the light emitting region of the diode. CONSTITUTION:A light emitting diode 1 is formed of a P type Ga1-xAlx substrate 8, a P type Ga1-xAlxAs epitaxial layer 9 and an N type Ga1-xAlxAs layer 10, and a P-N junction 11 is formed in the boundary surface between the layer 9 and the layer 10. Subsequently, an ohmic electrode 2 is covered on the back surface of the layer 10, a ringlike P<+> type region 12 is diffused to form preferable electrode connection on the periphery of the substrate 8, and an ohmic electrode 2 is mounted thereat. Thereafter, an optical fiber 5 having a clad portion 6 and a core portion 7 is connected to a light pickup window 13 surrounded by the electrode 2. At this time a conical coupler 4 having larger area of the bottom portion than that of the window 13 and made of the same material of refractive index as that of the core portion 7 is interposed between the fiber 5 and the window 13 with an adhesive 3.
