Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable automatic change of the damping property of the shock absorber in correspondence with the loadage of a vehicle by enabling free setting of the damping property on the side of shrinkage at the time when the vehicle is loaded or unloaded respectively. CONSTITUTION:The shock absorber is constituted by communicating a lower chamber 7 to an upper chamber 6 through the intermediary of the 1st and 2nd shrinkage-side damping valves 8 and 9 which are arranged in series to a piston 4 and allows only one-directional flow, by providing a bypass 11 short-circuitting the middle between these damping valves 8 and 9 to the upper chamber 6, and by providing a sleeve 12, along with the bypass, opening or closing the bypass 11 in accordance with the relative change in position of the piston 4. By this, the damping property on the shrinkage side meeting the respective requirements of the vehicle when loaded or unloaded can be provided independently and optionally. Especially, since the rate of change in the damping property on the shrinkage side on the occasion that the vehicle is loaded or unloaded can be set extensively and optionally, the property at the time when the piston 4 operates at a low speed can be improved.
