Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the pitting corrosion resistance of a known Al-Mg alloy while maintaining the superior characteristics by adding a small amount of Zn and a small amount of one or more among Cr, Mn, Zr, Mo, Ti and V to the alloy.
CONSTITUTION: This alloy consists of, by wt., 0.2W2.1% Mg, 0.05W1.0% Zn, 0.01W0.3% one or more among Cr, Mn, Zr, Mo, Ti and V, and the balance Al and inevitable impurities. The superior corrosion resistance of a natually oxidized film formed on the surface of a conventional Al-Mg alloy is lowered by adding such a small amount of Zn, and the alloy grains are refined by adding such a small amount of one or more among the above-mentioned transition elements. Thus, corrosion initiating spots are increased as much as possible to cause general corrosion, so local corrosion and pitting corrosion can be inhibited perfectly even in severe corrosive environment.
