Abstract

PURPOSE: By using a specific manganese salt, an oxine derivative and an alkaline compound as a catalyst, the polymerization of a phenolic compound is conducted to produce a polyphenylene ether of good color tone with lessened formation of diphenoquinone as a by-product.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of (A) a phenolic compound such as 2,6-dimethylphenol is carried out in the presence of (B) a divalent manganese salt preferably manganese chloride or bromide, (C) an oxine derivative of the formula (R1WR6 are H, 1W5C alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, hydroxyl, nitro, amino), preferably oxine, or 5-methyloxine, and (D) an alkaline compound such as sodium hydroxide, preferably in a solvent such as methanol, at 20W50°C. The molar ratio of component B/component A is 0.02W0.1, component C/component B is 2 and D/A is 2W20%.
