Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the high-quality titled polymer having excellent electrical properties, etc., by the oxidative polymerization of a nucleus-substituted phenol in the presence of a manganese compond, a basic compound, and monoethanolamine or diethanolamine.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polymer is prepared by the oxidative polymerization of a nucleus-substituted phenol (e.g. 2,6-dimethylphenol, etc.) with an oxygen- containing gas in the presence of (A) a basic compound selected from the hydroxides, alkoxides and phenoxides of 1A-group metals of the periodic table and hydroxides and oxides of the 2A-group metals (pref. sodium hydroxide), (B) a manganese compound (e.g. manganese chloride), (C) an organic solvent, pref. a mixture of an alcohol and an aromatic hydrocarbon, and (D) monoethanolamine and/ or diethanolamine.
