Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as a heat-resistant, oxidation-resistant resin and a heat-resistant, insulating adhesive, by reacting 4,4'-dihalodiphenylsulfone with an alkali carbonate in the presence of nitrite ions in a polar solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Polyoxysulfone of formula (X, Y are halogen, OH, NO2) is prepared by reacting (A) 4,4'-dihalopheylsulfone, e.g. 4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone, with (B) an alkali carbonate, e.g. sodium carbonate, in a polar solvent such as dimethylsulfoxide, while adding (C) a compound containing nitrite ion, e.g. sodium nitrite, to the reaction system. The addition of nitrite ions can be effected not only by adding an alkali(ne earth) metal nitrite, but also by introducing N2O3 gas into the system or by adding a compound which produces nitrite ions during the reaction, e.g. 4,4'-dinitrodiphenylsulfone, etc. The molar ratio of (C) to (A) is 0.05W1 to 1.
