Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a battery with a non-aqueous electrolyte having superior shelf life by reacting each hydroxyl group, which is bonded to the surface of a metal oxide as an active material for the positive electrode, with a specific alkyl ester so that the hydroxyl group is alkoxylated by the alkyl ester. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 5 is mounted on the inner surface of a case 1 via a current collector 6. A lithium negative electrode 4 is mounted over the positive electrode 5 with a separator 7 and a liquid-retaining material 8 interposed therebetween. This case 1 is then sealed by a sealing plate 2 through a gasket 9, thereby a battery with a non-aqueous electrolyte is formed. As the positive electrode 5 of this kind of battery, there may be used for example, manganese dioxide, curpic oxide, vanadium pentoxide, tetralead trioxide, tribismuth dioxide, silicon dioxide or the like. Such a metal oxide is reacted with an alkyl ester of p-toluene sulfuric acid, e.g., the methyl ester, ethyl ester or the like, thereby each hydroxyl group bonded on the surface of the metal dioxide in alkoxylated. It is used as an active material for the positive electrode.
