PURPOSE:To manufacture the pole height accurately, by forming the comb tooth shape films different from the length on a part of the substrate of the thin film magnetic head element and controlling the amount of polishment while observing the thin film section of comb tooth shape in polishing the element with the substrate. CONSTITUTION:On a part on the substrate 12 formed with the thin film magnetic head element 8, the film 13 of comb tooth shape and different from the length of tooth, is formed. After that, in polishing the thin film magnetic head element 8 per substrate 12 and making the pole hieght accurately to the scheduled value, the pole height mointor 13 of comb tooth shape thin film is obserrved from the polished side for polishment. Further, the amount of polishment is controlled according to the number of comb tooth exposed to the polished side and the pole height of scheduled value can accurately be obtained.
