Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce amorphous rare earth-based magnets having high residual magnetic flux density and coercive force as well as excellent corrosion resistance, toughness, and strength by a method wherein a super-high speed cooling rate is applied to cool a molten alloy consisting of one or more of rare earth elements and one or more of other elements.
CONSTITUTION: A rare earth element alloy is melted containing one or more of Sm, Pm, Ce, Sc, Y, La and other rare earth elements, one or more of metal elements such as Co, Fe, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Ni, together with half metal such as C, B, P, Si, and Ge. The molten metal is jetted from nozzle 2 and is dropped on the surface of a drum 3, double rolls 4, or a single roll 5 consisting of Al, Cu, Fe, etc. of high- thermal conductivity, and rotating with high speed of 1000rpm or higher. In this manner, the molten metal is rapidly cooled at a cooling rate of 103°C/s and formed into amorphous structure, which is produced into a wire or plate products 6. Said process provides an amorphous rare earth magnet having 100% densisty, excellent residual magnetic flux density, coercive force, corrosion resistance, toughness, and strength.
