Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the comsumption of the electrodes of ignition plugs by a method wherein the generation of a flame in the combustion chamber is detected and the duration of a high voltage discharge from a high voltage generating device to the ignition plugs is controled. CONSTITUTION:The ignition apparatus is constituted by the high voltage generating device having a breaker contact 3, a transistor 5, an ignition coil 10 and etc., a discharge time control device having a thyrister 11 and a shaping circuit 12, and a flame detector having a converter 15 and an ion current detecting plug 17, etc. When the breaker contact 3 closes, the transistor 5 is turned ON to allow an electric current to flow through the primary side of the ignition coil 10 while when the breaker contact 3 opens, the primary current in te ignition coil 10 is interrupted to thereby allow a high voltage to generate at the secondary side of the ignition coil. Next, when the engine combustion is started and the flame is detected by the ion current detecting plug 17, an electric current flows through the converter 15 to make the thyrister 11 turned ON whereby the discharges from the ignition plugs 14a-14d are stopped.
