Abstract
PURPOSE: To inexpensively produce a ferrous sintered metal having high strength by molding by pressure the raw material which is regulated of carbon contents by chemically decarburizing cast iron powder, and sintering the molding in a nonoxidative atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Cast iron powder is chemically decarburized to adjust its carbon contents to 0.2W1.3%. After this raw material iron powder is molded by pressure, the molding is sintered at 1,150W1,250°C in a nonoxidative atmosphere such as reducing atmosphere. The raw material iron powder used in this method contains less free graphite that hampers compressibility and the base of the powder particles is mostly ferrite. Hence, the sintered body having high strength is obtained. Since the cutting swarf of cast iron can be used, sintered metallic parts are produced inexpensively.
