Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium suited for vertical mangetization recording by forming a recording medium layer on the surface of a backing material by the combination of a sputtering method and a vapor deposition method in producing a magnetic recording body having magnetic recording medium layers of Co and Cr types. CONSTITUTION:After the inside of the bell-jar of a sputtering device is evacuated, an inert gas such as argon is introduced, and sputtering is performed on a backing material having beforehand been mounted, whereby a thin film of Co-Cr type of >=50Angstrom thickness is formed as an underlying layer. Thence, with a Co-Cr alloy as a vapor source, a vapor deposition film of Co-Cr type is formed by using an electron beam vapor deposition device. Then, the underlying layer formed by the sputtering method has magnetization easy axes in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the backing material, hence, the vapor deposition layer formed on this underlying layer also receives the influence of the underlying layer and the magnetization easy axes function as a magnetic recording body layer existing in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the backing material. Even more, the formation of the medium layer by the vapor deposition method is faster than that by the sputtering method and therefore the production time is made less than that by the sputtering method alone.
