Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an agricultural chemical, insecticide for cloth, etc. in high yield with controlling formation of by-products, by reacting toluic acid with a dialkylamine in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Toluic acid (e.g., ortho-, metal-, para-toluic acid, etc.) is reacted with a dialkylamine (e.g., dimethyl-, diethyl-, dipropylamine, etc.) using a tungsten compound (e.g., tungsten trioxide, tungstic acid, ammonium tungstate, etc.) as a catalyst at 150W400°C, preferably 200W300°C for 4W14hr, to give the desired compound. The amount of the dialkylamine is 1W20mol, preferably 2W10mol based on 1mol toluic acid. The amount of the catalyst is 0.01W5mol% calculated as tungsten based on toluic acid.
EFFECT: The catalyst of tungsten compound suppresses the formation of N-monoalkyltoluamides as by-products.
