Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain heteroaromatic nitriles by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of an alkyl-substituted heteroaromatic compound with ammonia and molecular oxygen, in high yield, by using an oxide containing Mo, P, Ce, thallium, etc., as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Heteroaromatic nitriles are produced by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of an alkyl-substituted heteroaromatic compound (e.g. dialkyl- substituted-pyridines o -pyrazines) with ammonia and molecular oxygen. The objective compound can be produced in high yield and selectivity by using an oxide of formula (A is Ce, Mn or W; B is thallium, Ti, Nb or Al; when a is 1, b, c and d are 0.1-7, 0-5 and 0-5, respectively and e is number determined by the other elements) as a catalyst. The catalyst is resistant to heat and reducing action and enables stable continuous operation over a long period. The catalyst can be produced e.g. by reacting compounds of each constituent element with water, evaporating the product to dryness and calcining the dried material at 350-700 deg.C.
