Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a nitrile readily, in high selectivity and in high yield, by catalytically reacting an alkyl-substituted hetero aromatic compound with NH3 and molecular O2 in a gas phase by using a catalyst having heat resistance and reduction resistance, capable of being stably operated for a long period of time continuously. CONSTITUTION:An alkyl-substituted hetero aromatic compound such as (di)alkyl- substituted pyrazine is catalytically reacted with NH3 and molecular O2 in a gas phase by using an oxide comprising a composition shown by the formula (A is Ce or W; a, b and c is 0-5; c is value determined by valence and atomic ratio of Mo and A and valence of O) such as composition shown by formula II or formula III as a catalyst to give a hetero aromatic nitrile useful as a raw material for drugs and agricultural chemicals. The catalyst, for example, is prepared by reacting a Mo compound with a Ce compound and/or W compound in an aqueous solution, evaporating the formed product to dryness and then burning at 350-750 deg.C.
